Project achievements: SUSANA develops a new model evaluation protocol
The FCH JU covers a wide range of cross-cutting activities that support both energy and transport developments. Removing regulatory barriers and increasing public awareness and trust in the technology can facilitate its entry into the market. Safety issues are among the priorities of the portfolio.
One of the FCH JU flagship cross-cutting projects SUSANA achieved great results in the field of safety engineering design and assessment of fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure.
The “SUpport to SAfety ANalysis of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies” (SUSANA) project aims to support stakeholders using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for safety engineering design and assessment of fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) systems and infrastructure through the development of a new Model Evaluation Protocol.
Along its lifetime, the project has succeeded to provide several outcomes. SUSANA developed a best practice guide in numerical simulations of problems specific to safety of FCH technologies. In practice, that was achieved by developing a CFD Model Evaluation Protocol (HYMEP) for assessment of the capability of CFD models to accurately describe the relevant physical phenomena. The users will have the capability to follow the correct modeling strategy.
In conclusion, thanks to SUSANA project, hydrogen safety engineers and regulatory/approval/certifying bodies have now a reference document accompanied by the supporting materials that will assist them to evaluate whether the CFD analysis is scientifically sound.
