Port of Valencia receives prestigious award for hydrogen project
The Port Authority of Valencia received on 12 March the 2019 GREEN4SEA Port Award for becoming the first port in Europe to use hydrogen energy to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, thanks to the FCH JU funded H2PORTS project.
The project will test and validate hydrogen technologies for port machinery in order to achieve solutions that produce zero local emissions, without affecting the performance and safety of port operations. The Grimaldi and MSC terminals in the Port of Valencia will demonstrate the prototypes, thus become the first European port to use hydrogen energy to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
Mr. Francesc Sánchez, General Manager,Port Authority of Valencia, stated: ’The H2Ports project is part of the Port Authority of Valencia’s energy strategy for a “zero emissions” model within the port activities. This project will soon be followed by others aiming to implement renewable energies and new storage technologies in ports. These initiatives show our firm commitment to energy transition and sustainability of port activities. The implementation of all ‘green’ initiatives has already resulted in a reduction of 17% in GHG while the cargo handled has grown by 24%.’’
The award ceremony took place in Athens and preceded the 2019 GREEN4SEA Conference. 8 awards were delivered in total, across 8 green categories. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: Port of Amsterdam, Port of Helsinki, Port of Montreal and Port of San Diego.
