Performance of SOFC stack breaks record thanks to project NELLHI
Fuel cells for stationary application and for heat and power offers significant benefits for the environment, with a strong impact on primary energy savings. Improving the lifetime and reducing production costs of fuel cells used in these applications, namely SOFC, remains one of the top priorities of the FCH JU for bringing a commercially viable innovative product to the market.
Following this path, FCH JU project NELLHI, which recently came to its end, delivered excellent results on improving the efficiency of those systems with its newly designed high performing 1kW SOFC stack component. The stack delivered a record breaking electrical efficiency of 74% and the design improvements led to increased manufacturing yields which contribute to the reduction of overall costs at cell and stack level.
At research level these excellent results will be followed up in a new project that recently launched “qSOFC" for further manufacturing automation and cost reduction.
In an even more positive note the innovative stack design produced by NELLHI will also be incorporated in a 116Kw fuel cell system, as a key component of the Finnish LEMENE smart grid. More information can be found in our latest news here.
