FCH JU at the European Sustainable Energy Week 2016
On the occasion of the 11th European Sustainable Energy Week, the FCH JU participated to several initiatives aiming at highlighting the role of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies against the backdrop of this year's theme: Power to the Consumer.
On the 15 June, the FCH JU joined a session together with CEDEC, Eurogas, EBA & GEODE, to underline the potential of renewable gases in decarbonising the energy system. Since the role of renewables in the electricity sector is currently well understood and less is known about the potential of renewable gases, this session gave the opportunity to emphasise the potential role that renewable gases can play in the EU energy mix and how the existing gas grids can accommodate them.
Commenting on hydrogen's potential, the FCH JU Executive Director Bart Biebuyck said “In the long term (2050) for the case of Germany, 14 to 20 million Tons of CO2 emissions could be avoided by converting otherwise-lost renewable electricity into hydrogen in a commercially viable way.”

In parallel, the FCH JU contributed to the development of the #Power2Consumers photo competition. This online competition allowed engaging with participants on their views for a sustainable future.

On the 16 June at 10.30, Bart Biebuyck, the FCH JU Executive Director, together with András Siegler, Director of Energy Directorate, DG RTD, handed over the key for a one-day test drive of a fuel cell car to the competition winner.
